Chieng Gong Zhi (James)

Updated: Nov 25, 2020

Welcome to another boring/inspiring post on here. Hi, my name is Gong Zhi but I am known as James, I am 19 this year. I am currently getting my Diploma in Broadcasting and Film at IACT.

Photography has been a passion of mine for a while, currently, I am still exploring different kinds of photography but I tend to take more street and documentary photography as these kinds of photojournalistic style to me it shows a story and just documenting life. From this passion, I have started my own side project called @givebackprojmy where I print out and give people a copy of the photos, you can find out more on instagram and the interview I recently did with photojam channel on Facebook. You can watch here: https://fb.watch/1YBL2_HWRL/

For this blogpost, I will be showing some of my photojournalistic style pictures that I have taken during this class.

Stand out

This was taken as a minimalistic style showing the men in the middle which makes him stand out. This was part of the first assignment about lines. For this photo, I want to express that just be different and stand out in doing what you do, one day you will get noticed by someone. The lines represent everyday life that many people follow something which becomes a style that is uniformed, but just be different and stand out.

Haiya

This was taken for the second assignment for the Journalism competition. I was out at petaling street one of the nights trying out street flash photography and all the shops around are starting to close. As I was walking out of petaling street I notice a path that I normally pass through was filled with rubbish and surely enough is the side entrance of the wet market of petaling street. Here in this photo, you can see an Alam Flora worker looking at the mess, he must be having a headache wondering how to clean this up but that is just part of the description. The city should implement more recycling initiatives and have better planning on the rubbish situation here as this is only from one side of the wet market and not the whole.

MCO Struggles

This is part of the second assignment on journalism where I have opted for the theme of life around petaling street. Before the MCO if you have been to petaling street you will know that this uncle's apom is good and usually there is a line. During the RMCO when I took this there isn't anyone, after taking this photo I walked up to him to get an apom and talked to him. From the convo he told me that business is bad, he is earning only 30% of what he normally earns and do not know how long he can continue. I would like to encourage readers to support local businesses especially from the older vendors and not just focus on the new hip places or your online/insta small local business.

FYI this photo will be one of my give back project, I hope I still can find him after this cmco.

I hope you had enjoyed reading my blog.

Do click on the PDF below to see the other works that I did for this photography class.

Hope you have a great day!
